Similar to our campaign with Stranger Things, Netflix tasked our team with building out a small campaign for The Witcher merchandise ahead of their Season 2 release. This was an incredibly fun experience given I'm a huge fan of the show and games, but it proved challenging considering the push-back of Season 2 due to the pandemic. Much like our Stranger Things exploration, we only had access to older assets for the majority of its conception. The major hurdle being: we couldn't make any of our 3 concepts look too similar to any of Season 1's merchandise ad aesthetics, but also had to anticipate what visual directions Netflix was taking Season 2 without them telling us. We also only had access to a few pieces of editorial language from Season 2 that Netflix instructed us to use for messaging. Regardless, the challenge was a nice corner for us to conceptualize ourselves out of, and a lot of the work turned out excellent.
The concept I took on, was our "Continent" path. As Season 1 introduced us to Geralt, Ciri, and Yennifer, by whisking the audience across time and lands, viewers also came to know the varied landscapes of The Continent as a backdrop and anchor to the trio's stories. I was largely inspired by old, cartographic elements, paired with rough parchment textures and a more, contemporary touch of topographic lines as an additional, textural element. In combination, these touches created an air of mystery, intrigue, and harkens to the unknown journeys the trio may face.
